Don Jacoby Stories of Ernest Williams http://thelinernotes.net/don-jacoby-stories-of-ernest-williams/ http://thelinernotes.net/don-jacoby-stories-of-ernest-williams/#respond Wed, 30 May 2018 18:35:47 +0000 http://thelinernotes.net/?p=1066 Continue reading ]]> In March of 1985 I decided to video tape one of my previous trumpet teachers at his house in Denton. It was on a Sunday morning, and I wanted him to tell me more about his early life and his career in general. I taped about two hours worth of tape, and this segment talks about his time in the Ernest Williams School of Music. Don (Jake) Jacoby would have been 64 at the time.

The First Annual Jazz Classic http://thelinernotes.net/the-first-annual-jazz-classic/ http://thelinernotes.net/the-first-annual-jazz-classic/#respond Mon, 21 May 2018 21:01:51 +0000 http://thelinernotes.net/?p=1045 Continue reading ]]> A few of us decided to have a small jazz festival in Sherman this year-2018. We brought in the UNT One O’Clock Lab Band, and their director (Alan Baylock) suggested bringing in Doc Severinsen as the guest artist. The concert was on April 12, 2018. I have attached some Youtubes of the concert, and later I post Youtube of the Q&A session at the Sherman Jazz Museum that afternoon with Doc and Alan. A film crew also arrived who were filming a documentary on Doc’s life, along with Doc’s daughter, Nancy. I was honored to give Nancy and Doc a tour of the third floor of the museum, but unfortunately they didn’t have time to see the other half of the museum on the second floor.

It was a great start to what I hope to be an annual event in Sherman, which can showcase the museum, and a guest artist.

Buck Clayton http://thelinernotes.net/buck-clayton/ http://thelinernotes.net/buck-clayton/#respond Tue, 24 Apr 2018 17:45:38 +0000 http://thelinernotes.net/?p=1040 Continue reading ]]> A collector from Houston donated several cds, books, and records to our museum last year, and I found this track while going through some of the cds. It’s a Buck Clayton CD with Jo Jones on drums, Milt Hinton on bass, and Joe Bushkin one piano. The names in the rhythm section got my attention, so I gave it a listen. I love the energy the rhythm section puts out, and there is no doubt where the time is! This was recorded around December of 1953. This is also one of my favorite tunes, “After You’ve Gone”.
